Project: Facit

Worklog: Here

Some of our favourite mods are those where the guts of a some inanimate object are ripped out and the lifeless shell used for something much more useful. This usually requires some fairly small components to be used but usually micro-ATX setups are small enough and provide a little more performance.

Either way, nothing is more pleasing than to see things such as Windows OS boxes or toasters become fully functional PCs but vils has a pretty unique take on this concept. In fact it's actually quite apt considering early PCs were purchased to do the same job as the object of vils choice. It is of course the typewriter.

The typewriter in question was from Swedish manufacturer Facit hence the project's name which he'd given to his childeren as a toy. Oh no, first AnG3L cuts up that toy car now someone else stealing kiddies toys for their mods! Haven't you people heard of scrapyards and sponsorship!? Only kidding, children get too many toys these days anyway. vils started by removing the innards of the typewriter to make way for a PSU and Mini ITX motherboard and a few other essentials.

He then made a custom motherboard tray and optical drive mount all secured on a plate secured using anti vibration rubber grommets. In place of the original keys, a SMK-85 mini keyboard was placed. It looks like it was made for the purpose! The small gap to the right of the keyboard is apparently going to be a hard disk LED.

The case is now nearly complete with the top having been put back on. The project sounds environmentally friendly too with very few new parts being used and mainly scrap being utilized. This also means that vils can stick to a 'zero budget' policy. Who said modding needs to cost the earth. On the right we can see a few bits installed namely the micro-ATX otherboard and PSU.

After deciding not to get the case powdercoated for fear the high temperatures would melt the epoxy used in its construction, vils decided to do things himself and Project: Facit has received its first coat of paint.
